Tools in the Toolbox
Practical people always having a useful set of tools on hand. It is very satisfying to have the right tool for a particular job. Similarly it is extremely frustrating not to have the tool that one needs. While we need a hammer for driving nails and a screwdriver for screws, a saw for cutting wood, etc., in our computer-dependent society it is good to have the right applications to transform our computers into tools of maximum usefulness.
Just as God has given spiritual gifts to His people for the work of the Kingdom so he has also equipped the Church with a variety of tools. We might even say that the tools are extensions of the spiritual gifts - simply because people with different giftings have migrated to particular ministries. There they can fully utilise and develop those gifts in ministry.
Each tool (=ministry) has its own usefulness and its own uniqueness in the context of the whole. For our part we have to know what each is good for (and not good for!) and then determine how it fits best into the overall ministry of the Church (and missions).
What tools are we talking about? In our context here we focus particularly on mass media tools: Radio, TV, Internet, Literature, Other media - as well as the outreach of the local church as it uses these and other tools for ministry.
Take time to review Communication Roles so that we can examine how the tools we have in our toolbox can be used to fulfil the various communication roles of the Church. As you will see some do it better than others.....
